Abstract | This research investigates the impact of economic integration and trade liberalization to Vietnam economy. Vietnam became member of ASEAN in 1995 and therefore automatically joined AFTA agreement. Under CEPT schemes, Vietnam has opportunities to access other potential growing markets in ASEAN that are surely to boost Vietnam export and economy. But under CEPT scheme, Vietnam is also to be opened for imports due to reduction of tariff. Import flows can provide Vietnam with new resources, products, and technology but in the other hand, domestic market will be partly cannibalized by exporters. From GTAP analysis (Globe Trade Analysis Project-GTAP model of University of Prudue New Jersey, America started in 1993), it can be concluded that AFTA has little intra trade purpose but the free trade area would be used as a catalyst for foreign investment. In the other hand, it can also be concluded that more liberalization of trade more growth that Vietnam would benefit. Economic integration surely benefits Vietnam in the long run but in the short run does it works for Vietnam? How to make changes to Import Taxes under CEPT schemes to take advantage of economic integration but limit its restrains should be main contributions of the research. |
