Abstract | The objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of different retention aid (PAM - Polyacrylic amide) and PCC filler (Precipitated calcium carbonate) dosages on drainage of fine paper furnishes, and on formation and other sheet properties of woodfree handsheets. Bleached chemical eucalyptus and acacia pulps were used as the main raw material of hand sheets. Through application of different dosages of retention aid and different filler additions, one can obtain potential information of filler retention and drainage rate in web forming and on related handsheet properties, especially formation. It is known that there are differences between eucalyptus and acacia pulps in these properties. Both pulps were refined in the Valley beater to tensile index 50 Nm/g; required refining times were found in the preliminary tests. Drainage time was measured in the hand-sheet making. Eucalyptus furnishes had shorter drainage times than acacia furnishes. Eucalyptus sheets had better formation than acacia sheets while acacia sheets had higher filler content and thus better filler retention at the same filler dosage, and also better strength than eucalyptus sheets. Eucalyptus sheets had a little higher brightness while acacia sheets had a little higher opacity, light scattering and light absorption. Their porosity and roughness were higher than those of acacia sheets. |
