Abstract | Jellyfish have been exploited and processed by China as a food source for more than a thousand years. Recently, a decline in world jellyfish production has created a shortfall in the market resulting in several countries exploring their potential for meeting the demand, particularly Japanese market. Thailand ranks second in term of total productions and exportations, behind only China. In 2003, the import volume of Japan represented 51 percent of total exportation of Thai jellyfish. This research is proposed to investigate the potential opportunities for expansion of Thai jellyfish export to Japanese market. Therefore, we will first focus on understanding the competitive edge of Thai jellyfish industly. Moreover, the challenges and opportunities for Thai jellyfish export have been assessed to be able to formulate a sustainable export strategy for this business. The nature of appropriate harvest environment is the major issue for gaining competitive edge of Thai jellyfish industty. With this advantage, Thailand can achieve a stable jellyfish production and thus satisfy the customers' orders. In addition, the integration of cost leadership and differentiation strategy is also proposed for enhancing the competitive position of Thai jellyfish export business. |
