Abstract | Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, is under a global spotlight since the successful Beijing 2008 bid in 2001. It is accurate to reflect that the world's sporting communities, television audiences and interested companies for Olympic Games are intrigued by Beijing's emergence as sports related golden opportunities with such enormous potential. The coming Olympic will strongly accelerate Beijing's economy development, the modernization process and the steps of constructing an international metropolis with the powerful push of so-called 'Olympic economy'. The Beijing Municipal government has promised to keep in mind the idea of "New Beijing, Great Olympics" and place emphasis on the concepts of "Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People's Olympics". The Olympic Games will bring about social and economic developments to the capital city and to the country, creating a unique legacy for China as well as for the whole world. Olympic-related opportunities, infrastructure/facilities developments and the current quality of event management expertise in Beijing are considered. In addition, support services are examined, along with specific sport-business opportunities. By the end of 2002, the strategic direction and plans for a long haul to the 2008 Olympic Games have been shaped. Beijing has announced to spend RMB 280 billion (US$ 33.9 billion)_in order to sta11 the projects for 2008 Olympic Games. Beijing will build 19 new stadiums and gymnasiums, costing a total of US$1.65 billion, to be completed by those companies which win contracts through the international bidding process. Beijing is currently undergoing the preparation phase for inviting global tenders for the construction of some Olympic stadiums and gyms, which would bring rich opportunities for international companies, especially the companies with Olympic expenences. This report will focus on analyzing the impacts of 2008 Olympic Games on Beijing, which are the oppo11unities and challenges from the government aspect, and try to provide a clear referenced framework of specific business opportunities of Beijing 2008 Olympics from the corporate aspect. |
