Abstract | In recent past the pulp and paper industry in China has been through a transition cycle. Being labeled as the 'New China' industry has entailed certain distinct, complex and competitive market scenaiios for growth oppo1tunities in years to come. The purpose of this research study is mainly to present the overview and examine the strncture of pulp and paper industry in China, and analyzing the competitive level of this industry. At the same time it determines the opp01iunity and challenges of this industry in China market. Attention has been drawn to the fact that the future market outlook is one with high potential, concluded on the basis of external environment and industrial structure of the pulp and paper industry in China. Much emphasis has been made on pulp industry, as China is one of the biggest importers of market pulp in the world. Competitive strncture along with Porters competitive forces helps determine the potential opportunities and threat for new entrants or investors interested in investing in China's pulp and paper industry. This research provides an insight on many aspects of opportunities and challenges existing in the pulp and paper industry in China. It primarily focuses on the supply demand scenario of pulp and in china, capacity expansion projects in China either by foreign direct investment or by de-bottlenecking the existing outdated mills, constrncting integrated state of the art mills. Such huge expansions require tremendous amount of investments, as a result lot of foreign investment can be seen in China. Joint ventures and alliances are being seen as the most common entry strategy by foreign investors. Finally 'Old China' is being transformed into "New China' industry with the help of technology transfer, secured wood pulp plantations and an efficient administrative system working in accordance with the WTO terms. |
