Abstract | Currently, free trade area is becoming one of the key economic and political instruments for many countries, including Thailand and other ASEAN members. ASEAN and China has reached framework agreement aiming to set up free trade area by 2010, and launching the early harvest program in agricultural products. Along with this regional free trade area, Thailand has also signed bilateral trade agreement with China to reduce tariff in vegetable and fruit between two countries, starting on 1st October 2003. For businesses, this agreement can provide both opportunities and challenges to individual business. This research, therefore, aims to access the impact from this agreement and extract the implication for Thai businesses, especially vegetable and fruit exporters, who export to China. To achieve the study objectives, primary and secondary data, especially trade statistics, are collected from both government and businesses. From the study, it is found that tariff elimination from this agreement provide more opportunities for Thai vegetable and fruit exporters to enter the China market. However, there are still many challenges to overcome, which should be pursued by both businesses and Thai government. |
