Abstract | The mining industry in Bhutan is in the infancy stage where the operation involves mainly extracting raw products and sells to the market that is very limited. Even then mining industly in Bhutan had made some contribution to the economic development in the 1990's. Fmthermore, there is a perception that the mining industry is a polluter to the environment and the ecosystem and is not sustainable by definition. However, since mining products are crucial both to other industiĀ·ies and to our daily life, there is a need to fo1mulate a sustainable development strategy to manage and to depict the future of the local mining industiĀ·y, as there is fast economic development in the country. Based on this strategy, some indicators needs to be developed in order to track down the progress and to evaluate its success. In this research paper, the result of a descriptive case study of two mining companies in the southeastern pa1t of Bhutan, "Study on the understanding of the concept of sustainable development and indicators" highlights key issues that need to be addressed for sustainable mining future. |
