AbstractA study about the risky construction industry in a developing country in terms risk and risk management practice is deemed to be beneficial to stakeholders in construction projects. This research comprises of two distinct parts. The first part is dete1mining the major risks in the construction industly through a survey on practitioners in construction companies in Hanoi, Vietnam. The second part is investigating the risk management practice in the indushy by researching one industi·ial and one civil corporation in Hanoi. It has been concluded that all the three objectives of the study have been achieved: (1) major risks in the indushy were determined; (2) the overall picture about risk management practice in the industTy has been drawn; and (3) recommendations for conti·actors to cope with major risks in the industry and manage risks effectively in long term have been proposed. Building a framework and policy for risk management and benchmarking strategy utilization are the two basic recommendations to conti·actors in the consti·uction indushy for better long tem1 practice and development. Finally, some suggestions for further study have been given.
