AbstractThe Thai Sugar Industry plays very important role in foreign exchange earning. The quality of sugarcane and yields of Thailand are lower than other sugar producing countries which can be considered as the shortcomings in the competitive market. This study examines the land suitability classification in Suphanburi province of Thailand which is one of the major sugarcane growing areas. One fifth of the Suphanburi Province is covered by sugarcane cultivation and the province has three sugar refinery factories. The methodology was based on FAO Framework for Land Evaluation to analyze the suitability. Limitation concept combined with parametric classification approach was employed for physical suitability analysis by using GIS. The findings of the study indicate that on the basis of physical suitability of the total area of the province about 14 percent are highly suitable, 62 percent moderately suitable, and rest of the areas falls in the marginal suitability and non-suitability categories. Soil erosion and lack of support services are found to be hindrance in sugarcane cultivation, particularly in case of small farmers, which need to be addressed.
