AbstractThe main objective of this research was to assess the viability and seed quality as well as gennination performance of 4 indigenous tree species using different pre-planting treatments. The experiment has been done at the Forest Research Centre in Lao PDR. The species studied were Alstonia scholaris, Afzelia xylocarpa, Dalbergia cultrata and Pterocarpus macrocarpus. The techniques of assessment for seed viability had been done in the laboratory by using the cut testing method. The average percentages of seed viability for four species were over 90%. Seed treatments before planting were tested in the laboratory for one day. The treatment was used six different methods for each species such as: 1) control, 2)cut, 3)cut soak cold water for 24 hours, 4) cut soak hot water 70°C and left until water become cold for 24 hours, 5)soak cold water and 6) soak hot water for 24 hours. In field experiments were used random design there were four main sites with 120 replicates. Each replicate contained 50 seeds. The environmental factors were used under the same condition such as temperature, humidity, soil and sunlight. Data analysis was used SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) and excel database. The result shown that the rate of seed germination was significant differences for each species and for each treatment method. Most species were able to germinate under the control and treatment methods. The result of germination by using treatment method to promote seed for quick germination was higher than control method for some species.
