AbstractHigh-yield BCTMP offer cost-effective opportunities in achieving the desired end-use performance, particularly for traditional "wood-free" papers. Potential benefits and limitations of BCTMP in both uncoated and coated fine paper grades are discussed in this thesis book. In this context, the feasibility of diminishing some of the negative effects of BCTMP in fine papers are also discussed. Also the potential at slotted screened BCTMP (to remove coarse fibers) is studied. Both unscreened and screened BCTMP pulps are used in handsheet testing. Adding BCTMP into softwood and hardwood (Eucalyptus) furnish will increase bulk, but at the same time for screened pulp, air permeability and TEA values are reduced. Use of ascorbic acid seems to reduce brightness reversion in all test points. For uncoated fine paper, addition of unscreened BCTMP will have some limitations because of BCTMP's lower brightness and coarse fibers. Slotted screening of BCTMP will clearly reduce paper roughness. Replacing 20-40% of Eucalyptus laaft by Aspen BCTMP can be good practical target in case of uncoated fine paper. For coated fine paper, addition of BCTMP will have some positive effects on base paper. For example, bulk improvement without any significant loss of strength and optical properties. Coating can also compensate some BCTMP effects in optical and surface strength properties. Depending on final critical paper properties there is a potential to replace from 0 to 100% of Eucalyptus kraft by "screened" BCTMP.
