AbstractThe construction industty contt·ibutes much to the overall socio-economic development. In contt·ast, construction activities also contribute to the environmental damages such as depletion of non-renewable natural resources, energy consumption, air pollution, and generation of wastes. The Maldives, being a small island nation with few natural resources, are challenged by these activities. Therefore, the industty stakeholders are required to move on to a practice towards sustainable consttuction in the countty. This thesis finds how present mechanisms in the construction industty deal with the environmental problems and procedures to focus on the sustainable consttuction concept. The existing mechanisms are studied and identified for any barriers to its implementation. A case study approach is implemented where two case studies were conducted in the Maldives on two ongoing, large public projects. A qualitative research technique is used with in-depth interviews being the main data source. The findings of this research enabled the author to believe that the sustainable construction concept was not familiar in the industty. It was not a concern at all where protecting natural environment was believed to be a hot topic. Although several barriers exist in implementing the concept, such as lack of familiarity and lack of resource people, there are some attt·ibutes already promoting the sustainable constt·uction objectives
