Abstract | Generating and managing high-quality statistical data that is objectively reproducible and comparable across organisations requires standards at all stages of the production process. Among these many standards, two that are widely adopted by the international community are the Generic Statistical Business Process Model (GSBPM) for guiding the process of developing statistics, and the Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX) for sharing data sets and their related metadata. The goal of this thesis is to characterise the completeness, coherence, and effectiveness of these standards through case studies and controlled experiments. The first objective was a review and analysis of SDMX and its implementations. The second objective was a gap analysis between GSBPM and SDMX. A longitudinal study in a statistical production office and related case studies revealed a number of differences between specifications and implementations. The final objective compared the suitability and performance of SQL and NoSQL architectures for developing and managing SDMX metadata. Results from experiments of development and usage with different metadata structures and sizes found that the NoSQL architecture performs better than an RDBMS architecture in several important metrics. |
