Abstract | Characterization and removal of wood resin from mixed tropical hardwood (MTH) pulp were conducted. Characterization of wood resin from different pulping stages was achieved accurately by Gas chromatographic-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) at STFI (Stockholm, Sweden). Two types of resin were recognized: (1) small fraction of damar resin is unreactive and inaccessible, it only was found to be concentrated in centricleaner reject, (2) large fractions of fatty acids, fatty alcohols, and sterols were found; These can be removed chemically, e.g. by surfactant addition. Effect of recycling of corresponding filtrate and surfactant addition on MTH pulp's properties was studied. Resin content was studied in a closed water system, too. Oxygen delignified pulp was used, and MTH ECF bleaching with DoED1D2 sequence was applied for this study. To simulate the mill practice, corresponding filtrate was recirculated to washing stage in the following test run. Minor surfactant in each washing stage after bleaching was employed. To improve accuracy, filtrate amount was limited and all operations were kept uniform. Result of this experiment showed the same trend as that observed in mill scale. Surfactant addition enhanced removal of extractives. Pulp brightness and pulp extractive content were reduced when filtrate was recycled and when surfactant was added. Mechanisms of agglomerating and dispersion were also discussed. |
