Abstract | Coating color and coated paper were produced by using oxidized starch, oxidized phosphate starch, oxidized octenylsuccinate starch, oxidized cationic starch and oxidized hydorxypropyl starch as co binder. The amount of the modified tapioca starches was varied from 4, 8 or 12 parts in coating color formulation. Coating color viscosity and water retention as well as paper surface strength and printability were evaluated and compared with a 100% binder in coating color formulation. The results show that modified tapioca starch influenced both on coating color and coated paper properties. Coating color was increased in viscosity and in water retention as well. In addition the coating slurry showed shear thinning in either of the fotmulation when latex was replaced with modified tapioca starch. Oxidized hydroxypropyl starch had better quality compared to the other binders. Although it was 6% lower in dry pick resistance but printability was almost the same if latex per se was used as a binder. Oxidized hydroxypropyl starch was the recommendation of this study regardless the production cost. Including the production cost might promote oxidized starch which required less modification. |
