| Abstract | Rural-urban migration is a poorly researched phenomenon in Bhutan although its effects are widely felt through the increasing pressure on its urban towns. Many people are choosing to leave their rural homes to settle in urban centers and, the Government is not yet appropriately equipped to deal with this internal movements of population, since they know so little about the factors that are contributing to the process. A pilot research attempt of its kind, this study aims to review the nature and general impact of rural-urban migration on the rural population of Shengana Gewog in Bhutan 's western Punakha District. In doing so, the study also focuses on the process of migration including factors that influence migration decisions. The unit of analysis in this research has been identified as the rural household. |
