Abstract | Viet Nam is gearing all it resources towards the industrialization and modernization of the economy. As part of this huge development plan, the stock market was, for the first time, recognized and established in the country. The aim to set up the stock exchange in Viet Nam is clearly defined: First, to speed up the equitization process of state-owned enterprises. Second, to create liquidity for those shares issued by publicly owned corporations. Third, to build up a new channel of raising funds that is readily accessible to all in need. Fourth, to serve as a locomotive for Ho Chi Minh City's socio-economic development in the first stage and for the whole countty in later stages. However, after two years of operation it seems that the stock market has not become a minor to reflect the economic health of Ho Chi Minh City and an integrated part of the financial system. This thesis is, therefore, directed to two main tasks: The first one is to assess the socioeconomic impacts of the stock market on Ho Chi Minh City. The second one is to suggest measures in order to intensify the stock market's role in the economy, given the findings identified in the first part. |
