AbstractThe distribution system is one of three main part of power system and plays an important role in any electricity industry. There are some problems need to be solved to meet customer requirement such as loss, voltage regulation, power quality ... One of them, reliability improvement using overcurrent protection scheme is the most important problem and it forms the main parts of this study. The evaluation reliability of the most low reliability network is studied first. And then, a case study is one of forecasted networks in Hanoi, which has high rate of load increasing and also many problems to deal with. Many protective devices such as fuses, reclosers, sectionlizers, breaker, are used to deal with overcurrent problem. The fault current calculation is done by using PSS/ ADEPT software developed by Power Technologies, Inc USA. After that, the study is continued with the work of setting parameters for all protective devices as well as coordination for these devices. Most popular reliability indices used by many utilities, SAIFI, SAIDI, CAIDI and ASAI, are calculated for the studied network. Some suggestions to improve reliability are illustrated. The thesis suggests formulas to calculate the reliability indices of two or more feeders, or may be generalize to an area or the whole utility. Beside these parts, commented and suggested specifications of protective devices are given. They are very useful to standardize the equipment in the network that helps for design and planning tasks, especially in the rehabilitation period of Hanoi in coming years.
