Abstract | In Thailand, the construction of guardrails follows the standard drawings of the Department of Highways, which are adopted from the AASHTO Standard Drawings and design method, which follows the AASHTO design guide. So far, no full-scale crash test and computer simulation of vehicle/guardrail impact has been conducted in Thailand. However in Thailand some details of guardrails are different in dimension and materials than in the USA (such as post spacing, post shape and connections). Therefore, with respect to savings in time and expenses, the analysis of vehicle/guardrail impact using the finite element method by computer simulation is advantageous. The goal of this project is to validate and improve the impact performance of the existing weak-post W-beam guardrail system in Thailand so that it satisfies the requirements of NCHRP Report 350 at test level three. The results from the simulation show that the original Thailand guardrail system did not satisfy the requirements of NCHRP Report 350 at test level three. A modified Thailand guardrail system, which satisfies the requirements of NCHRP Report 350 at test level three, was then presented in this report. |
