AbstractDue to unsustainable nutrient management, organic waste, wastewater and septage that contained high concentration of nutrients discharged into surface water and onto soil without prior treatment which causes large extent of environmental impacts. The main objective of this study was to increase scientific lmowledge on the behavior of material fluxes related to environmental sanitation by using method of Material Flux Analysis (MF A) and to assess the possible mitigating measures aiming at optimizing nutrients recovery in urban and peri-urban areas. Pak Kret municipality with its agricultural area in Nonthaburi province was chosen as the study area. The nitrogen fluxes in relation to organic waste and wastewater were chosen as indicators. The processes defined in the system included peri-urban agriculture, markets, household, on-site sanitation treatment, wastewater treatment plants, composting, and collection and sorting process. The mass flows and nitrogen of all wastes were determined tlu·ough the balancing of inputs and outputs of each process. The results reveal that about 540 kg of nitrogen was disposed of daily in landfill in form of organic solid waste. Additionally, about 1,000 tons per day of nitrogen in wastewater and septage were discharged into groundwater and surface water and onto soil, likely causing environmental impacts. The results also show that the key process contributing the organic material fluxes was household, as characterized by a large turnover of materials and waste production. Therefore, waste management measures taken at the household process could enhance resource recovery and environmental protection in Pak Kret municipality. This study proposed 3 mitigating measures to reduce environmental impacts and optimize the nutrient recovery including construction of wastewater treatment plant , co-composting solid waste and septage and central wastewater treatment plant together with composting of solid wastes, most of which were reused the treated effluent and products to agricultural areas.
