AbstractExperimental work has been carried out to determine the load carrying capacity of the vetiver grass-clay composite material. Load bearing tests of wall panel specimens and flexural tests of beam and joint specimens have been carried out to obtain the axial and flexural stress limits of the composite material for a fixed displacement. Finite element models of a vetiver grass clay composite single story house using two different wall thicknesses are made and existing mechanical properties of the composite material are used into the finite element models. Numerical analyses of the vetiver grass-clay composite material have been carried out by applying vertical loads due to self-weight of the structure, load due to weight of the roofing material and live loads. Appropriate assumptions are made for the analysis to ensure similarity between the actual structural conditions and numerical simulation. Different governing stresses are obtained by the numerical analyses of the models. These stresses are compared with the maximum allowable stresses obtained from the experimental work. Live loads are varied to finally obtain a value which satisfies the analysis and optimizes the design of the single story house. Additionally, comparison has been made between models of different wall thicknesses and selection of the most adequate design is done based on the maximum live load carrying capacity.
