Abstract | Computational wind engineering (CWE) as a new branch of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been developed recently to numerically evaluate the interaction between wind and structures. ANSYS has been used to study wind effects on billboard structures. Good agreement with experiment results is obtained in the verification problems for wind flow around a circular cylinder. The reasonable results and shortcoming are given out for wind flow over a cubic building to compare with experimental and published results. Following the verification step, wind flow around a plate with various aspect ratios, clearance ratios and wind directions is studied. The drag coefficients are obtained. The formation of reverse flow regions, separated points, and reattached points of flow also are presented. The results are compared with published wind-tunnel results. Finally, wind flow around billboard structures with one circular cylinder column support was simulated by using the "Fluid-Solid Interaction" feature in ANSYS. The drag coefficient varying with time and the displacement of the billboard varying with time was obtained in one case of aspect ratio and clearance ratio. The effects of simple obstructions located in front of billboard structures were also examined. Some limitations on results obtained are discussed. |
