AbstractAngkor was the capital of Khmer empire from ninth- thirteenth centuries. The monument at Angkor, which sheltered refugees of Cambodian civil war in 1970s was declared as a world Heritage by UNESCO in 1992 after Cambodia returned to peace. Tourists from other parts of the world resumed visiting Cambodia since then. The majority of them visit monuments at Angkor and presently Angkor has become one of the most visited places in South-east Asia. The tourism boom at Angkor is followed by a urban development boom in its vicinity. These two driving forces have resulted haphazard urban development and environmental degradation in Siem Reap town, which is in the periphery of the protection zone of Angkor. After reviewing the state of environment in Siem Reap and the existing institutional mechanism for urban management, this study proposes development control and environmental management measures for urban development activities, particularly for tourism development activities. The study emphasizes the need of strengthening local government to take the leadership in decision-making in the urban development zone.
