AbstractJapanese musical instrument manufacturers managed in less than 50 years to achieve an outstanding perfo1mance: becoming popular brands ; leading the market in terms of sales and being praised by specialists and critics . What an outstanding success given the fact that still a 100 years ago, occidental music and musical instruments were completely unavailable to the Japanese society. ill the1910s, a few Japanese companies start producing musical instruments and sta1t promoting them abroad For 50 years Japanese manufacturers will enjoy a steady growth in terms of market share and the 70s marks the rise in awareness of American companies who feels threatened by this new competition, filing legal complaints on copying and trademarks violation. Nowadays Japanese instruments manufacturers are a reference and a model for other companies and their brands are synonymous of quality. Their success both with popular audience and professionals is a call to tty and understand how Japanese companies transformed the musical instrument market standards in terms of production and management.. It seems particularly relevant to analyze, in the light of such a study if lessons are to be learnt out of the success story of Japanese manufacturers and if eventually transfer of knowledge or technology would prove efficient under a different culture
