AbstractIn the construction of Tha Dan Dam, many slope excavations have been made at the dam abutments, access roads, quarry areas and viewing platforms. The excavations were made in residual soils, weathered zones and fresh rocks of the volcanic rocks of the dam site. Some instability problems occurred on rock slope without major failure. The rock mass was mainly controlled by vertical joint sets. The result analyzed by the stereographic projection showed that there are four predominant sets of joint orientations. In general, geological condition of the study area was quite good. The results of Markland's test method are considerably different from the actual slope stability because the assumed surface roughness is lower than the actual one. After the reservoir impounding, only the small volume of rock block is expected. Field and laboratory tests were carried out to assess physical and engineering properties of weathered volcanic rock profiles. Typical weathering profile was summarized. Limit equilibrium method was used for stability analysis. Based on the obtained information, the slope cut in the study areas found to be stable under saturated and rapid drawdown condition.
