AbstractTwo series of electrokinetic experiments were conducted on the Soft Bangkok Clay to study the effects of current density and influent pH on electrnkinetic processes and to determine the electroosmotic conductivity, ke, and the electroosmotic water transport efficiency, ki. In the first series, eight tests were conducted at different current densities ranging from 0.25 mA/cm2 (20 mA) to 1.00 mA/cm2 (80 mA) using distilled water as influent. In the second se1ies, five tests were conducted with constant current densities of 1.00 mA/cm2 (80 mA) and at different influent pH of 7, 8, 10, 12 and 14. In all cases, the soil was "undisturbed". Results from the first series showed that the flow rate increases as the current density increases. In tests with different influent pH, results indicated a gradual increase in electroosmotic flow between pH 7 to 10 and a significant increase from pH 10 to 14. The pH of the cathode compartment remained high and the flow rate was constant throughout the testing period. Increasing current density and different influent pH did not result in considerable increase of energy expenditure for the same number of pore volumes transported. Energy expendihire per unit volume of the Soft Bangkok Clay processed is about 120 kWh/m3 to 180 kWh/m3 . The electroosmotic conductivity, ~ of the Soft Bangkok Clay is 5.86 x 10-10 m2 N per s to 7.99 x 10-9 m2N per s. The electroosmotic water transport efficiency, ki of the Soft Bangkok Clay is 1.38 x 10-7 to 3.16 x 10-7 m3 I A per s.
