Abstract | The deterioration in groundwater quality in Bangkok Aquifer System necessitates the evaluation of the groundwater quality and the existing monitoring network system. The data required for this study is collected from the Groundwater Division of the Department of Mineral Resources. This evaluation is based on the geostatistical analysis. In geostatistical analysis, Variogram models are fitted to represent the spatial variability of each quality variable. Observed data of each variable is interpolated by the ordinary kriging. The analysis is carried out to prepare the groundwater quality maps for each quality parameter and overall critical zones maps are prepared and assessed. Reduction of estimated errors in kriging is considered as one of the criteria's for selection of the best network system among the different alternatives. Groundwater quality maps show the high concentration of groundwater quality of entire study area by Sodium, TDS, and Chloride. In general, the groundwater quality is found to be inferior in the coastal areas, Pathumthani and in the areas west to Chao Phraya River. The existing minerals in the soil matrix may be a source of contamination of some groundwater quality parameters. It is observed that the existing network does not suit the critical zones of the groundwater quality because of high KSD values observed in the monitoring stations. The existing groundwater monitoring network system in the study area is evaluated based on the identified critical zones of the groundwater contamination. Improvements are given to the existing network system by analyzing the geostatistically different arrangements. Two designs which give the satisfactory results are recommended for field application. |
