AbstractTurbo Codes was introduced in 1993 at ICC by Berrou, Glavieux and Thitimajshima in their paper, "Near Shannon Limit error Correction coding and decoding - Turbo-codes". A very powerful channel coding scheme was developed by Berrou, Galvieux and Thitmajshima which utilizes the ideas related to both block and trellis codes. The encoding scheme uses simple convolutional codes separated by interleaving stages to produce generally low rate block codes. The decoding is done by decoding the convolutional encoder separately using soft-output Viterbi Algorithm and sharing bit reliability information in an iterative manner. This coding scheme is called Turbo Code and is found capable of achieving near Shannon capacity performance, the theoretical limit. (Berrou et al., 1993) The purpose of this thesis is to implement Turbo Code for the encoder utilizing ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) as the IP core to integrate with other communication systems In most wireless communication systems, utilizing batteries as the power source, the components are required to be small with low energy consumption to lengthen the battery life. Therefore, the most important aspects of our design is the size and power consumption, which are required to be compact and has low power-consumption respectively.
