AbstractThis thesis study investigated about the effect of cooking conditions and characteristics of 4 and 6 years old acacia hybrid from middle Vietnam plantation, 7 years old acacia auriculiformis from Thailand and 7 years old acacia mangium from Indonesia. All different acacia age and species were cooked alkaline charge, temperature and time of cooking as variables. Oxygen delignification, ECF bleaching and handsheetmaking were applied in this experiment also. Generally, acacia species gave very high cooking yield. At the same kappa number level, highest cooking yield and viscosity of pulp was obtained with the pulps cooked at lowest temperature and longest time. The younger of acacia hybrid gave higher yield with lower kappa number for equal cooking conditions. The highest cooking yield and viscosity was found for 4 years old acacia hybrid and clearly lower than others for 7 years old acacia auriculiformis. For the best pulp and paper properties of pulps, these acacia should be cooked to kappa number around 20 and kappa number incoming to the bleaching around I 1-12. The average, to get the same kappa number as 4 years old acacia hybrid, 6 years old acacia hybrid needed about 1.5%-2% higher effective alkaline charged, 2%-2.5% for 7 years old acacia mangium and about 4% higher for 7 years old acacia auriculiformis. Older tree of acacia hybrid gives higher kappa reduction in oxygen delignification. All acacia pulps gave high or very high brightness (86.5-91.5%); 6 years old acacia hybrid seems to be easier to get higher brightness than others. Acacia pulps gave very short and thin fiber; 6 years old acacia hybrid has higher fiber length but lower fiber coarseness of pulp than 4 year old, the number of fibers is very high (around 31 million/g) and the same level for both age of acacia hybrid. The paper properties of pulp are nearly similar for different age of acacia hybrid. A little bit higher strength potential for younger age, but higher age of acacia hybrid gives bulkier sheet and higher light scattering and opacity of pulp. The lowest strength potential found for acacia auriculiformis. The strength potential of Acacia mangium is lower than 4 years old acacia hybrid, but higher the others.
