AbstractHexenuronic acid consumes bleaching chemicals, decreases brightness and lead to more brightness reversion. A high temperature chlorine dioxide bleaching at 90°C (D*) was applied in the first stage of D-EOP-D sequences to remove hexenuronic acid. The effect of kappa factor of high temperature chlorine dioxide stage for eucalyptus camaldulensis was studied. Kappa factor of 0.2 in D* showed the best performance. The option of dividing the high temperature chlorine dioxide stage into two phases (Do/D*-Eop-D) was also tested. The brightness gain was similar with D*-Eop-D. The ability in removing HexA of Do/D* stage was similar with that of a regular Do stage. Slightly better tear-tensile development for this option was observed. Finally the effect of cooking kappa number and wood species on bleachability with sequence ofD*-EOP-D was studied. With cooking to higher kappa number of near 20, both eucalyptus camaldulensis and acacia mangium showed lower bleachability with D*-Eop-D. No benefit in brightness gain for acacia mangium was observed when applying D*-Eop-D.
