Abstract | Recycled newspaper is a very important raw material for newsprint. During the time prior to deinking, the old newspaper needs to be collected, transported, and stored. The storage (aging) condition affects its deinking potential. The goal of this study was to understand how the storage (aging) condition of old newspaper (ONP) influents its deinkability. The effect of storage (aging) conditions on brightness of the deinked pulp was investigated using accelerated aging and natural aging methods. The different parameters of the deinking process were studied in order to find the best way to treat the aged material and obtain the target brightness with acceptable cost for energy and chemicals. Experimental design parameters in the lab study included pulping time, pulping temperature, soaking temperature, flotation temperature and surfactant dose. It was observed that the old newspaper was aging differently under different storage conditions. This study quantified the effect of storage condition, namely: outdoor-uncovered, outdoor-covered in dry and rainy seasons, and at warehouse (indoor) storage on brightness of the deinked pulp for different storage time. It was concluded that the storage temperature has the most important effect on pulp brightness; indoor storage paiiially preserves the deinkability of the old newspaper. To remedy for the brightness loss due to aging, the shorter pulping time and higher surfactant dose were recommended. Application This paper discusses about decrease in deinkability of old newspaper during the storage time prior to deinking and suggest some changes in deinking conditions in order to get the acceptable product from thermal aged old newspaper. |
