Abstract | Fines have many impacts on paper properties. In chemical pulp, they improves the bonding ability between fibers but deteriorate its brightness. In mechanical pulps, the fines have function to improve both, bonding ability between the fibers and improve the paper brightness. One might be curious the effect of mechanical pulps fines if its added to the chemical pulp. The objective of this thesis is to study the effect of the additions of SGW and CTMP fines in eucalyptus and MTH pulp. Different brightness of the chemical pulp and mechanical pulp fines, different proportions of CTMP and SGW fines (0, 5%, 15% and 30%) to be added and different refining level (3000 and 6000 rev) of the chemical pulp are the variable that is studied in this thesis. Opacity, brightness, permeability, roughness, tensile index, tear index, specific formation and PC number was measured. Opacity is increases, brightness can be increase with higher brightness of fines (compared to kraft pulp brightness). Tensile index is the same or lower. Tear strength is lower. Permeability is lower. Roughness and formation can be higher or lower. PC number also can be higher or lower with fines addition. |
