Abstract Fluctuations in the raw material quality as well as in the ink removal efficiency will greatly influence the observed bleaching brightness. Because of existing and expected environmental legislation, a more holistic view is necessary when applying chemicals in a recycling process. This study was conducted to evaluate bleachability of US newspaper and its effects on wastewater discharge. It was observed that brightness was increasing with increasing H202 charge. Alkali charges have a optimum level, if it is higher, the higher is H202 charge. Brightness gain was 12% on industrial newsprint pulp sample. Results also show that both NaOH and H202 charges caused higher COD loads. Part of TDS increase is due to higher NaOH charge. The rest is caused by increasing dissolution of organic material from pulp. Lower brightness was achieved by treated water (recycled water + river water prepared by chemical treatment) than river water the distilled water gave the highest brightness. The Higher the sodium hydroxide dosage, higher is the COD and TDS and also the load is more pronounced in case of treated water. Results from wastewater analysis collected from mill indicate that most of TDS after wastewater treatment consist of inorganic material (mainly sodium salts).
