Abstract | Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have an impo1iant role in the development of the national . economy. Therefore, many initiatives and projects have been tried by international agencies to stimulate small and medium enterprise development in the Lao PDR, because the sector is believed to be the catalyst of the market economy growth. The macroeconomic and sector policies play an important role in economic development. Policies measure will not only affect relative factor and product prices but can also interfere with the functioning of the market. However, much more needs to be done at policy level to promote SMEs growth in the Lao PDR. This research study identifies the currently government policies towards small and medium enterprises, the problems facing the credit and non-financial support from govermnent and non-govermnent assistance programs. Then, the nature of Lao entrepreneurs is identified tlu·ough the survey. Recommendations are made as to how small and medium enterprise sector might be developed under the supportive business enviromnent and entrepreneurship factors. |
