AbstractFailure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) have been a popular tool among various industries due to its simplicity and problem prevention capability. The use of Risk Priority Number (RPN) has been the typical method of conducting FMEA analysis. However, this method was considered only from the manufacturer's point of view until the importance of involving the customers perspective in FMEA analysis was highlighted. Despite the improvements in customer-oriented FMEA, the duplication of RPN values still exists, affecting the failure prioritization. This is mainly due to the lack of unique values generated by the existing models. Presented in this study is an attempt to improve the effectiveness of customer-oriented FMEA. The equation used for calculating the RPN value of the existing Power law model has been modified to propose a new power law model to produce unique values to all possible combinations. Thus, producing no ties among failure modes. Additionally, VIKOR a Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) tool, which has been widely used in the conventional FMEA analysis, has been integrated into the customer-oriented FMEA analysis to achieve robust results. Application of VIKOR has shown the capability to reflect the weights of risk factors effectively to attain a proper prioritization of failure modes.
