Abstract | In the existence of supply disruptions, appropriate strategies should be employed by the firms to help guard against the harmful effects of these disruptions. In this dissertation, the focus is on the use of inventory holding strategy to deal with supply disruption problem. The dissertation considers a two-echelon supply chain comprising a supplier, who is subject to stochastic disruption, and a retailer, who is facing stochastic customers’ demand and has to deal with supply disruption problem. The arising question is how a retailer’s optimal inventory policy can be derived so as to minimize the cost per time unit in the presence of stochastic supply disruption and stochastic demand. Two inventory review policies, i.e., periodic review and continuous review, will be examined in this dissertation. With regard to the periodic review policy, an optimal base stock inventory policy for the retailer is derived by considering time-dependent holding and shortage costs, and continuous variable length of a supply disruption so as to minimize the total inventory cost per time unit. Furthermore, the effect of replenishment lead time is also taken into consideration. The existence of a retailer’s optimal inventory policy is confirmed through numerical experiments and sensitivity analyses. With regard to the continuous review policy, a reorder point-order-upto level policy is examined. Time dependent inventory holding and shortage costs, replenishment lead time, and continuous variable length of a supply disruption are also considered in the derivation of an optimal inventory policy in this case |
