AbstractEmploying a suitable inventory policy is vital for the success of any supply chain in terms of improving the efficiency and responsiveness of the supply chain. In this dissertation, a Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) model is presented in combination with inventory positioning, for supply chains with a single supplier and single retailer/two retailers, where the retailers face Poisson or compound Poisson customer demand. The initial mathematical model was developed for the case of single supplier – single retailer supply chain with Poisson customer demand to examine the appropriateness of the modeling approach, and then extended for the cases of single supplier – two retailers with Poison customer demand, single supplier – single retailer with compound Poisson customer demand and single supplier – two retailers with compound Poisson demand. Mathematical models were developed using the concept of demand rate and the developed mathematical models were used to help determine the optimal system base stock level, delivery quantities to retailers and cycle length such that the total expected inventory cost of the whole supply chain is minimized. Numerical experiments are conducted to examine the applicability of the proposed mathematical models and sensitivity analyzes are also conducted in order to examine the behaviour of the optimal solution with respect to various input parameters. Finally, some useful conclusions and recommendations are given based on the results of the numerical experiments and sensitivity analyzes
