AbstractThis study attempted to understand the role of extraccllular cryoprotectants in cryoprescrvation trials of silver barb, Barbo(les gonlonolis. As a preliminary test, initial screening of various extraccllular cryoprotectants were conducted. Milk Powder 6% BSA 20% and Glucose 10 % indicated promise. From the final experiment, Glucose 10% had more consistent mean motility 50±0.0 (66.6% of control), mean viability 45.7±0.14 (149% of control) and mean fertilization rate 48.3±0.218 (75.7% of control). None of the treatment hatched except for control. While this study indicates that there might be sonic positive effects of certain extracellular cryoprotectants on the motility, viability and fertilization rates, the experiment needs to he repeated for more reliable results as the quality of both eggs and sperm during this experimental period were less than optimal.
