AbstractFor the last decade, major external crises have impacted tourism in Asia. SARS outbreaks, terrorist attacks in Bali and the December 2004 tsunami are among the most explicit and recent examples of these emerging threats for tourism in the Asian region. Because of the important economic and social role played by tourism in the Asian economies, tourism actors from both public and private sectors (national government, government agencies, major tourism industry groups, small and medium size businesses) need to develop an effective answer to these threats. Risk and crisis management offers an excellent conceptual and practical framework to deal with crises and disasters triggered by these external shocks, mitigate their economic impacts as well as their harmful consequences on image and develop effective and consistent prevention strategies. It provides tourism actors with a step-by-step approach, which has to be implemented before, during and after crises, to improve their preparedness to major crises and ability to manage them.
