Abstract | In the thesis, formulation of two different shell elements, which are a c0 Degenerated Composite Shell Element and a Four-Noded Quadrilateral c° Composite Shell Element Based on Assumed Strain Fields, is presented. The elements are tested through several numerical examples and the results are presented. The c0 Degenerated Composite Shell Element, in a combination with standard 8-noded solid elements, are used to model a composite sandwich plank with several potential engineering uses including light-weight structures and foundations and temporary coverings for use in roadway repair. A finite element model of the plank is presented and used in a numerical analysis to compute displacements and stresses. Deflections of the plank are compared to those of the equivalent weight I-beams. The stress distribution pattern of the plank is also compared to those of equivalent weight I-beams and to those of an isotropic, aluminum plank of the same geometry. Discussions are made on results obtained from the analysis and recommendations for future studies are discussed. |
