Abstract | This research study deals with the management of epidemic outbreaks using Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in Hong Kong as an example and a benchmark. The outbreak of SARS had important consequences on many sectors of the Hong Kong economy and the government was forced to implement a certain number of measures in order to stop the spread of the epidemic and to revive the economy. Hong Kong learnt lessons from the SARS experience and should now be better prepared to the emergence of a.new epidemic. Following the crisis, international organizations issued many reports and various recommendations designed to governments in order to better prevent and handle any future outbreaks. The outbreak of SARS in Hong Kong showed how a new disease can quickly threaten the whole world and should serve as a lesson for the whole community. This research study shows how important it is to constantly remain vigilant and prepared to the emergence of a new disease and also how difficult it is to communicate risk without spreading fear and panic among the community. The outbreak of SARS in Hong Kong is an example that can be applied to any epidemic outbreak in any country of the world. |
