AbstractThanks to Government's effort in undertaking reform, Vietnamese banking sector have accomplished significant changes in the structures, regulation, and operation, which have brought a gradual integration of the whole system into the international market. However, besides numerous achievements, commercial banks have disclosed series of problems marked by the burden of NPLs and distressed assets, limited capabilities in credit risk assessment and management, and inadequate transparency and bank supervision. Lacking banking skills in identifying risk and appropriate and accurate tools to manage credit risk of their clients, credit department and staff of the banks have still addressed to traditional methods of tracking historical data to assess customers' credit quality. By the time the company misses its payment, it is too late for the bank to be able to do anything useful to save the situation. This study is an attempt to examine the current situations of credit risk management in Vietnamese banking system, from that to realize the roots of prevailing problems. Thereafter, by approaching the new concept of: Broad-based credit risk engineering, the research will select some of the credit risk management techniques and models relevant to Vietnam's condition and propose some recommendations for applying them to enhance the efficiency in credit risk management in Vietnamese Banking system.
