Abstract | Although many systems exist for automatic classification of faces according to their emotional expression, these systems do not explicitly estimate the strength of given expressions. In this thesis an algorithm capable of estimating the degree to which a face expresses a given emotion is described and empirically evaluated. The system first aligns and normalizes an input face image. It then applies a filter bank of Gabor wavelets and reduces the data's dimensionality via principal components analysis (PCA). Finally, an unsupervised Fuzzy-C-Mean (FCM) clustering algorithm is employed to induce a set of cluster memberships, which are then mapped to sub-groups (degrees) of a facial expression (i.e. Less Happy (LH), Moderately Happy (ME), and Very Happy (VH)). This unsupervised method is used to determine the best pair of Principle Components and the centroieds of the clusters for latter classification. To test the hypothesis facial expression from the Carnegie Melon University (CMU) facial expression data base is used. The test results on four basic emotion's (Happy, Surprised, Angry and Sad) degree estimation reflect the hypothesis. The accuracy is measured empirically which shows it is possible to estimate the degree of facial expression using the FCM algorithm |
