Abstract | This research study presents the development of the computerized Bangkok Bus Transit Management System, BBTMS to enhance performance evaluation of bus operation in Bangkok. BBTMS consists of three modules namely: Bangkok Bus Transit Information System, BBTIS, Bangkok Bus Transit Analysis System, BBTAS and Bangkok Bus Transit Performance Evaluation, BBTPE. BBTIS is the database management system module which is developed to overcome the primitive approach as currently employed by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) for their bus operations. As presently practice, bus operation and management in Bangkok still rely on the manual approach in data collection, analysis, and planning. BBTIS intends to provide an alternative of data collection, process, and analysis of bus operation through the developed computerized system. BBTIS also provides a comprehensive set of computerized tools for information delivery and a platform that enables straightforward management of distributed information via internet technologies. On the other hand, BBTAS module retrieves information from BBTIS module and develops the bus performance indicators. These indicators are classified into three groups: general performance, effectiveness measure, and efficiency measure. Each performance measurement group is further divided into performance classes and sub-classes based on their related characteristics and criteria. The weights of each performance class and subclass are mathematically conducted to describe the bus operating performance. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied for weighting the bus performance classes and sub-classes. Subsequently, all bus routes are evaluated using these determined weights assigned to each performance indicator. To demonstrate the application of this developed system, this study uses the last developed module, the BBTPE to analyze the operation performance of all bus routes of the BMTA through the relationship between the BBTIS and BBTAS modules. All three types of BMTA bus services: air-conditioned buses, EURO buses and regular buses are evaluated based on their operation performance. Results of the finding indicated that among all 58 air-conditioned bus routes, bus route number 145 has the best performance considering all mentioned indicators and route no. 95 is the worst. On the other hand, for 52 EURO bus services, route no. 20 ranks first and route no. 75 ranks last. While among all 88 regular bus routes, bus route no. 34 is found to be the best performance route while route no. 140 is the poorest performance bus route. Finally, this computerized Bangkok Bus Transit Management System, BBTMS is developed and configured as a centralized network with a central server and several client computers. The central server is used to manage and also to analyze the performance of bus operations. Several client computers can be distributed at different administrative levels to permit the BMTA staff to input all bus operation data. Moreover, BBTMS is designed for authorized users to gain access to any distributed client computers and it can also limit the access from certain users. Thus, the BMTA administrators are not only able to access the desired performance evaluation regarding their bus operations/services at their authorized level, but they are also be able to evaluate the bus performance of different bus routes, divisions and/or zones as well as different bus type of services. |
