Abstract | Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has long been used by most long distance service providers to route calls through their IP backbone. Services like Vonage and messengers like ICQ. Yahoo, MSN allow voice chats too. Even Microsoft's XBox and Sony's PlayStation use VoIP as a part of interactive gaming. What is relatively new and interesting is VoIP over Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks- like Skype. Skype is a free Internet Telephony software that 'just works. 1" Everything that is required from call set-up to call routing goes right into the P2P network. Founded by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus His (of KaZaA fame) Skype heralds the rise of a comprehensive IP Communications Industry- instant messaging, presence management, tile-sharing and voice communication as a part of applications and services. This research is about how IP Communication Services over P2P networks may affect mobile telecommunications. It discusses how applications like Skype might change the landscape. and potentially provide relative advantages for 3G (3rd Generation of Mobile Services) operators. With a long-term perspective, the research attempts to figure out a way in which Telco roles can be reinvented in this rapidly changing Telecom environment world. For immediate action, some ways of integrating the capabilities of telecom infrastructure providers and others with a Skype-like application are identified. The report also identifies ways of creating opportunities to generate subscribers to the WiFi, 3G et al. networks vis-a-vis Skype-while minimizing overheads. |
