Abstract | How to deal with cross-cultural issues has been the subject of intense debates and researches for about three decades. This cross-cultural dimension is very important for global firms, especially multinational companies (MNCs), which have to deal daily with cross-cultural issues between the different corporate cultures of their numerous subsidiaries as well as the different national cultures inside the same entity. Cultural diversity creates conflicts due mainly to miscommunication and uncertainty brought by a new culture. However training and experience can help people to surpass their fear of other cultures and develop their communication skills. If cross-cultural issues can be addressed and limited, rarely is cultural diversity considered today as a resource to create added value. This however was the point of view of Roman leaders more than 2000 years ago and the fact that they placed cross-cultural management at the core of their strategy shaped the long-lasting Roman culture and helped them to thrive for 1000 years. This synergistic approach really creates value, and should thus be used more widely by MNCs. |
