Abstract | One of major approaches for contractors to enhance project performance is the utilization of effective leadership by project leaders. However, there is little attention focused on their effectiveness in the construction industry in Thailand. This study is mainly based upon Fiedler's contingency theory and Path-Goal theory. The key variables are surveyed, compared with previous studies, and their intercorrelations identified in the context of the Thai building construction industry. The results of this study identify current practices in leadership styles of construction site managers (CSMs) and leadership effectiveness in terms of group performance and job satisfaction of immediate subordinates. There is no predominant leadership style of CSMs, but they tend to employ the directive and achievement-oriented style more frequently than the supportive and participative style. The subordinates seem to be not satisfied with their jobs in most aspects, and their performance is moderate. The associations among key variables are identified to explain the possible relationship. Fiedler's contingency theory of leadership seems to be somewhat applicable, but further study is required. The determinants of leader behavior according to the perceptions of CSMs are identified as different from other leadership theories. A general model for leadership effectiveness is proposed for practitioners. |
