Abstract | Undeniably, strong economic growth has also brought some environmental problems to Thailand. During the time of economic expansion, several parties have expressed their concerns over rising environmental problems. Over the last decade, Thailand has been increasingly threatened by the problems of industrial wastewater, hazardous wastes, natural resources degradation, worsening air and water pollution and a decline in biodiversity level. Even though Thailand is regarded as a country with sufficient natural water supply, yet, certain areas of the country can experience a period of water shortage, especially in the Northeast region. Additionally, forthcoming, Thai government will strongly and seriously forces both manufacturers and household sectors to concern more for environmental protection. These are the sign indicates the huge expansion for Water and Wastewater Treatment market which is a good chance for the Water and Wastewater Treatment companies. This research study attempts to find out the opportunity for small- and medium-sized Water and Wastewater Treatment companies in Thai market. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted to truly understand the perception of SMEs that are involved in this industry. Overall current situation of the industry and SMEs in Thailand are also gained from the in-depth interviews. Moreover, PEST, Five Forces, and SWOT analysis would be pe1formed based on the data collected both from interviews and literature reviews. Based on the SWOT analysis, the results reveal that though there is high competition and competitors both domestic and international in Thai market, an opportunity to grow still available for SMEs in this industry. However, the weaknesses and threats of SMEs in this industry is existing and being the great barriers defending the opportunity for these companies. To eliminate them and maximize the core competitiveness and competencies of the companies, some recommendations are given. These recommendations comprise of the better service offered to customers; creation of SMEs network; forcing the government fully implemented water protection policies; applying of e-commerce; and requiring more support from government. |
