Abstract | Availability of resource inputs such as land, water, fish seed, fish feed, and fertilizer are the primary factors for assessing potentials of the development of integrated fish faming systems. This study focuses on the availability of these resources in Luangprabang Province, where land use types are diversified. The study area was selected to include both lowland and upland areas where different types of agricultural activities are practised. Forty eight farmers in four villages of three districts were interviewed. The villages were Paksy and MoungKhai Villages in Luangprabang District, Sanghai Village in Pakou District and Nambo Village in Phonxay District. The study revealed that there is a high potential for developing and promoting the rice-cum-fish culture, livestock-crop-fish culture, livestock-fish culture and crop-fish culture in Paksy Village and Moungkhai Village because these villages located in the lowland areas meet the primary resource requirements for the integrated fish farming systems e.g. ini.gation, proximity to seed and feed supplies and large market demand for fish. Small-scale integrated fish farming systems in Sanghai Village and Nambo Village cannot be developed due to their upland locations, distant from fish seed and feed supply. Rice-cum-fish culture is less likely to be promoted in Nambo village due to lack of access to irrigated water and suitable land for Aquaculture. Sanghai Village and Nambo Village rely fully on seasonal rainfall in the rainy season and rivers or streams in the dry season to supply water for agriculture activities. |
