AbstractThailand is located in hot and humid climate zone. It has high temperature and high relative humidity all year. Therefore, air conditioners are needed for increasing comfort level in the residence. Energy use in the house is extremely high when the air conditioner is used. Demand Side Management Office (DSMO), of the Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) wants to slow down the growth in household energy consumption. They have initiated a project to promote low-energy housing. Home Energy Rating (HER) is the project that DSMO want to promote for low-energy houses. This thesis study is to develop natural ventilation, energy use, thermal comfort, and indoor condition calculation methodology and tools for the HER project. It also includes the study of home energy rating system in other countries, like the countries in North America, Australia, and Europe. It can help raters to define score or level of low-energy houses. In this work, weather data collected at the AIT meteorological station in 2000 are used to simulate energy consumption and thermal comfort in the reference house. A home plan in the Thai government project is choose to be the reference house. The computer program developed in the Energy Field of Study of AIT and wind-induced ventilation calculation procedure are used as a tool to simulate energy use and indoor condition in the reference house. This scoring system is based on thermal comfort and energy use. Criterion for thermal comfort under air-conditioned environment of the American Society for Heating Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) as well criterion for adaptive comfort for natural environment are used. Criterion for energy use is based on energy use for thermal comfort. The home plan that is low energy use and good thermal comfort level will get high score in this rating scheme. The total score is 200 point, 100 points for energy use and 100 points for thermal comfort. In case of thermal comfort condition, the home plan will get 100 points and every 1 °C higher than comfort reference temperature the score will be reduced 10 points. The electricity use in the reference home plan that uses air-conditioner all the occupant time will be 20 points and 85 points in case both fan and air-conditioner are used to achieve thermal comfort
